Math Enrichment – Probability and Combinatorics Edition
March 2, 2020 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm
An event every week that begins at 4:00 pm on Monday, repeating until March 30, 2020

Instructor: Lisabeth Lueninghoener
Time: Mar 2, 9, 16 & 30, 4 – 5:30pm
Class Cost: $60/student
Suggested Age: 7 – 12
This class is designed to help nurture a love of math in all students. Math classes, by necessity, can often be comprised mostly of arithmetic leading some students to decide that they are ‘no good’ at math or it is boring. This is like trying to foster a love of reading with spelling drills! Kiddos can love reading and not spelling (or vice versa!). The same is true with math. This is why we have actuaries and accountants, but also theoretical people, too!
This class aims to take kids on a journey away from what they normally think of as math and show them that the field can be much larger. We will work on counting methods and probability. Questions like, “If you have 3 quarters, 4 dimes, and 3 nickles and pull 4 coins, then what are the odds they total to $0.40?” Hopefully we’ll also visit the Pigeon Hole Principal as well as toss in some graph theory via the age old postal route question.
