Micro:bit Distance Classes

An event every week that begins at 3:00 pm on Monday and Thursday, repeating until May 22, 2020
We’re offering two classes using the BBC Micro:bit.
The hardware: You will need to own a BBC Micro:bit for this class. If you live in Los Alamos you can order through STEAM Lab and do a porch pick-up on Barranca Mesa. Otherwise you will need to order your own. We will not need them for the first week of class.

The classroom: Classes are five weeks long and start the week of April 20th. We’ll use Google Classroom to conduct the classes. You need a non-school google email to join the classroom. We will have a weekly video chat (Mountain time) for each class in which I will discuss the theory behind the programming that we’ll be doing.
We’ll have some “Unplugged” activities each week, in which students can learn how algorithms and variables relate to everyday life and we’ll work on programming our micro:bits using Microsoft Makecode.
In addition to the scheduled video chats, I’ll have optional “homework” for them to work on during the week. They can message me in Google Classroom to ask for help or suggestions and they can share their projects there as well.
Getting Active (Thursdays 3pm-4pm): Students are introduced to variables and develop different programs using the BBC micro:bit to help families get active. They learn to track steps, select random activities, and verify if they have completed the correct number of iterations. This class is meant to get your kiddos moving and learning at the same time.
Musical Micro:bits (Mondays 3pm – 4pm): Students compose musical phrases and write algorithms to play their phrases on pitched instruments (e.g. recorders, xylophones, or pianos). They then program the micro:bit to play their phrases when events are triggered and and experiment with using the accelerometer. Finally, they consider whether the micro:bit can be used as a music-making device, especially for those who might not have access to instruments. We may get as far as creating a theremin or have that as an extension activity.
